Mechanics of Structure

The diagram below shows the structure of a building. Structure is a system of connected members that can resist load. The connecting members are beams, columns, foundation and shear walls. The load gets transferred from the beams to columns to the foundation or from shear walls to foundation. The dimensions of these members depends on span of the building. The longer the span of the room the more depth of the beam and the more the load on a column the more the thickness of the column.

In this module we got to learn about the structure and the forces acting on these structures. Different forces acting on these structures are compression, tension, torsion, twisting etc.
